The Shadow: Lamont Cranston, having lived a life of ethical degradation, is “reborn” as a singleminded crimefighter with the talent to haze gentlemen’s minds. This adaptation of the venerable mush novels and cherished stereo show (carried to the theaters before in the late 1930s, and in a 1940 serial comes frustratingly close to performing, although flounders. Cranston is both inscrutable and boring. Incredible production layout and wonderful outcomes get lost in a film that keeps the viewer at Ann’s magnitude all the way through. What a waste of an awesome supporting cast! Cast includes Alec Baldwin, John Lone, Penelope Ann Miller, Peter Boyle, Ian McKellen, Tim Curry, Jonathan Winters, and Sab Shimono. (105 minutes, 1994)
The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes: The first of Disney’s duplicate comedies with youthful Russell as the college whiz inserted with a pc-mind, which winds up posing a threat to local gangster Romero. Playing God: This film is a preposterous tale of drug addicted ex-surgeon Duchovny employed by gangster Hutton to be the personal crisis medical expert for his shot-up and sliced cronies. Illicit: Cast includes Barbara Stanwyck, James Rennie, Ricardo Cortez, Joan Blondell, and Charles Butterworth. Nutcracker the Motion Picture: Much of this rendition of The Nutcracker, acted by the Pacific Notthwest Ballet, is like a music video with rapid cutting and close-ups of legs, faces, and elbows. This is extremely irritating. However the Tchaikovsky music is, obviously, amazing, as are Maurice Sendak’s sets and costumes. Cast includes Hugh Bigney, Vanessa Acute” Patricia Barker, Plod Walthall, Russell Burnett, and the voice of Julie Harris. (89 minutes, 1986)
The Egyptian: Ponderous, often accidentally ludicrous biblical times soaper with Purdom cast as the tender, truth seeking title personality, set in old Egypt.
